A fishing tradition we will go

MER

With my father, brother-in-laws and I set to embark on our 21st Annual trip north on Friday morning, in search of the wily brook trout, I’d say I’m about giddy as a school girl right now..

Keeping a tradition alive for 21 years – especially a fishing one – isn’t always an easy task. Even when you’ve found a great spot and have spent a dozen or so years going there, things do have a way of changing over the years.

The key is learning to adapt and making all decisions as ‘a group’. So long as we continue to catch a few fish, have a nice spot to camp, enjoy a friendly game or two of horse-shoes and have a good time, then all is right with the world.

Sure, we went through years when the fish weren’t biting and years when they were practically jumping in the boat! Other times when the flies were bad and things would go awry, and then times when everything was a smooth as butter.

I think the important thing is just getting out there and doing it! By calling it a ‘tradition’ – as much a cliché as it is – I find you do your utmost to keep things alive.  In today’s day and age, it is important to have the few days each year to unwind and relax in the splendour that is the Great Outdoors.

For all of you out there who do it, you’ll know what I mean. There’s just something special about being outdoors with family and friends in the magical time of rebirth.

I’d have to say, though, if the flies’ do turn out not to be bad, the fish are hitting big time, and the Habs are still on the radio, that would ok too..

  1. Habs go down in a ball of flames tonight, and the bugs at our cottage (north of Wakefield) are ferocious, oh and I thought they were Quebec Reds!
So, here’s what I see happening, the bugs are unbelievably bad, no Spekle Trout biting, because the bugs are so bad they are afraid to come to the surface, back to your tent only to find no hockey, instead, old time fiddle and banjo music.
    Sounds like Deliverence to me.
    Squeeeel LOL

    Good luck

  2. I was camping two weekends ago and the bugs were everywhere. Don`t forget the bug dope. I think the fish will be coming out. Water is still cold and the rain has been limited. Good luck, and enjoy!

    1. Hey Iggy…looks like you were wrong about the Habs..and maybe the flies too, we’ll see.

  6. Good luck with the fishing and don’t worry about Iggy he is still bittter about his awsome TML and still wants any other team to win as long as it’s not a Canadian team…LOL!
oh! and I want to express that I know what you mean about how important it is to keep these traditions alive- yes – as much a cliché as it is. Yearly outdoor trips with long time friends and my sons, without these few days each year, yes my life would be incomplete. PS just got back from a fishing trip! :0)

  7. lucky Habs, I dodn’t cheer against them because they are a Canadian team. I chher against them because I hate them, but not as much as I hate the Chokers from Ottawa.
Bugs are bad so I’ll be 50/50

  8. good luck man

i envy you. did the algon. park trip for a few years but every parted ways because weather was always so unpredictable (sunburn one day, snow sqwalls next night while eating supper) but really miss it. maybe will go back some year now that my son is older now. best memory fishing though was when Sens went to finals/ shore fishing for mudpout cooler at my feet game on radio and beauty weather, will never forget that afternoon. not in the same class as brookies but just one of those days.

p.s. love this blog. was disapointed when you disapeared from paper but must admit that this is better love reading replies. keep it up boys. here to fishin and huntin

  9. Looks like fun times. Good luck and we’re looking forward to the pics and stories. Now excuse me if this is a dumb question but WTF are “the Habs”

Just kidding but my point is, there’s more to life than Hockey and I for one am sick of hearing about it.

  10. oh and your Habs are looking a lot like the Ottawa Senators, play well, then pack up the tent and go home early

    1. Iggy, I am going to wait till I get my photos in order..to create a new post about the trip…

But I can tell you this..the flies(as you predicted) were gawd-awful and the Habs weren’t much better..but the fish, on the otherhand, were really biting well the first 2-3 days..with the overcast skis and chop on the water.
