Better get your fishing license

marlin

One very sad fisherman in North Carolina is wishing he had purchased his fishing license last week, before entering the State’s big Blue Marlin contest.

One forgetful Peter Wann of Alexandria Virginia was fishing aboard the Citation during the annual Big Rock Blue Marlin tournament when a boat-mate landed a record 883 pound Marlin.

The behemoth marlin broke a tournament record set in 2000.

The $900,000 prize money was as good as in the bank, until official’s discovered Wann had not purchased the required State fishing license before entering the tournament.

Doohh!!!

The tournament board had not choice but to declare the runner-up boat the winner with its 528.3pound blue marlin.

I wonder if this guy will be asked to go fishing again.

  1. wow 900 000$ big ones, id be kicking myself repeatedly.

Do they ask for permits here in Canada when enrolling in a tournament? I’ve been to a couple when younger and didnt require license to fish.

    1. CC, I would think that unless its Family Fishing Weekend – the only two times per year that no license is required in ON – you would always need to have a valid fishing license.

      Does anyone know differently?

  2. if I’m not mistaken, children under 16 do not need a fishing license.
If he gets tired of kicking himself, I’ve offer my services and boot him a few times.

  3. People under the age of 18 and over age 65 do not need a fishing licence in the Province of Ontario…… so if you are 18 you need a licence. You may also need to purchase an Outdoors Card if you do not have a valid one. And then there is the Conservation Licence or the Sports Licence and it all gets confusing.

If you are disabled and have a disability/handicapped permit, you do not require a fishing licence…so I understand but can’t seem to find the information on MNR’s website.

Always have a fishing licence/hunting licence etc. Fines are wild and so they should be…
Poor guy….I bet he’s feeling really nauseated.

  4. you are right on the dissability handicap permit .. also .. being under the age of 18 the law reads must have birth cirtificate on possesion and it says that so try not to get away with students cards or even a drivers permit . if the mnr wants to get you they can

  5. Thanks for the info Susan but I disagree strongly, you shouldn’t need a fishing license, it should be free, we Ontario people own the resourses in this province already. When the Ontario government brought out fishing licenses (read TAX!!!) they promised the money would go back into the fisheries. They lied, hahahahahahahaha
    surprise surprise
there is less money being spent on fisheries in Ontario now that ever before.

    But thanks for the info

  6. the mnr may be spending less but there are groups that get tons of government money for fish and to line there pockets

  7. WOW… that man will never be the same. Oh well… chalk that up under the “easy-come, easy go” category.

    1. Yes, he’ll never the same thats for sure, especially after his fishing partners beat the living tar out of him!

  8. Susan, you seem pretty up on your ON fishing regs…are you an angler?

Iggy, you honestly believe the provinces should not issue licenses to fish, or at least not charge for them?

  9. resident of Ontario pay too much in taxes to have to pay another tax, non res is a different kettle of fish so to speak
a license is just another tax that keeps going up and up and up every year. No fishing license stays the same price every year.

    1. At least in a few years you’ll be eligible for the senior discount…I think my father
in QC gets 10% off or something..and ON must have a senior rate.

  10. I think after 65 it’s free but I’ve got a long wait for that, and I’m sure the govies are hoping I never make it

  11. lol iggy what about the guys that come here from QC with charter boats take up docking space at local harbor pay the same as you and me for docking and charter everyday and use the fish cleaning station and leave buckets of heads and tails for my tax dollars to clean up . yes it is there right to do that .. but to pay no tax when making that kind of money in ontario is outragouse . they pay absolutly no tax for there use of anything .
