Florida’s Beautiful Southwest
Staying in Naples and Marco Island, Florida, unveils a tapestry of natural wonders and cultural richness. Sunsets paint the sky in hues of orange and pink, casting a mesmerizing spell over the horizon for my wife and I. Amidst swaying palms and gentle sea breezes, every moment in Naples and Marco Island is an symphony of relaxation and enchantment, beginning with this entrance to the Naples/Marco Island KOA Holiday!
KOA History
Kampgrounds of America (or simply KOA) in case you didn’t know, is the world’s largest system of private campgrounds, including franchised and company-owned locations across North America. Started in Billings, Montana, in 1962 by Dave Drum and John Wallace on Drum’s small Montana property after watching hoards of travelers headed to the World’s Fair in Seattle. That first KOA property on the Yellowstone River, campers paid $1.75 per night for a site, which included a fire ring, picnic table, hot shower facility, restrooms and store.
The first KOA campground took-off and set the stage for great things to come! By the next summer, the men worked on creating a ‘system’ of campgrounds throughout North America, under the name Kampgrounds of America (KOA) where they began selling franchises. Now with over 525 Kampgrounds in operation, KOA is synonymous with quality and consistency among outdoor enthusiasts, just like here in beautiful Naples, Florida!

KOA Naples/Marco Island offers a variety of lodging options, including 50 amp camping sites, glamping tent sites, comfy camping cabins and, finally, the pinnacle of comfort luxury cabins. Our luxury cabin was awesome – fully renovated and well-appointed with everything you would require for a comfortable stay. Ours had a bedroom with full bathroom, bunk beds and full kitchen and dining area. Just about the nicest cabin I have ever stayed in, located conveniently in front of a gorgeous heated pool!
Just 5-minutes down the road, anglers can take advantage of fishing under the Marco Island Bridge. Its a great spot with ample parking and solid concrete platform to fish from. Another angler watched a Manatee swim past just before we arrived.
The beaches on Marco Island and Naples are very nice but parking comes at a premium and is difficult, if not impossible to find during busier times.
Final Thoughts
Southwest Florida offers diverse angling opportunities in its pristine waters. From the expansive Gulf of Mexico to the labyrinthine mangrove estuaries, anglers like my wife and I pursued a variety of species, including snook, redfish, barracuda, snappers and blue runners. Whether casting from shore, chartering a boat, or kayaking through serene backwaters, the region’s rich marine ecosystem promises thrilling experiences for both novice and seasoned fishermen alike.
KOA ensures convenient access to a variety of destinations across North America including this one, offering diverse landscapes and experiences. The Naples/Marco Island KOA property has come a long way since Hurricane Ian flooded it with 5+ feet of water in September, 2022. The entire staff, volunteers and contractors worked tirelessly over the past 18-months to bring this wonderful location back to its current pristine condition. We were so pleased to finally visit this wonderful spot! If you enjoy camping, fishing and relaxing in a beautiful scenic part of Florida, do yourself a favor and head southwest. You may just find me at the boat launch with a fishing rod in my hand!
