Barenaked Ladies cancel SeaWorld Show following Animal Rights petition
I just knew the Barenaked Ladies were doomed after they parted ways with original leader singer (heart and soul of the band) Steven Page!
Following a recent petition by an Animal Rights Activist against the band’s upcoming performance at Orlando’s SeaWorld, Barenaked Ladies have chosen to cancel the show altogether; in yet another apparent ‘cave to pressure’ from a radical ‘tree-hugging’ organization.
A resident of St. Catharines started a petition asking Barenaked Ladies to reconsider their SeaWorld concert scheduled for Feb. The petition received nearly 12,000 signatures (still scratching my head over that) and included a suggestion the band watch Animal Right’s propaganda flick Blackfish – a film portraying claims of abuse to killer whales in large theme parks.
In a post on their Facebook, Barenaked Ladies stated; ” We’ve talked things over, and decided not to play at Seaworld at this time. We watch movies too, ya know!”
So, without coming out and saying they’ve heeded to pressure on basis of cruelty at SeaWorld, the Ladies claim their decision to cancel had more to do with their fans than Animal Rights. (eyes rolling…)
Dammit, I just knew that infamous line from If I had a Million Dollars where the Ladies sing they want a fur coat, but not a REAL fur coat that’s cruel – would come back to haunt us!!
Come on guys, your decision to cancel SeaWorld has EVERYTHING to do with Animal Rights and ‘perceived’ cruelty to animals portrayed in some propaganda film, why not come out and admit it?
On a more personal note, I am already booked to visit SeaWorld with my family in January (have e-tickets on me as we speak) even plan to write an article about it, and if you think this guy is canceling because of some PETA-style petition or video, you’ve got another thing coming!
The Barenaked Ladies went on to say that “The SeaWorld folks have been gracious, and extended us invitations to the park to learn more about what they do, and how they do it”
My suggestion to the Barenaked Ladies: take SeaWorld up on their offer next time before running off to the Big Smoke with your tail between legs, I bet even Rob Ford goes to SeaWorld!!
Oh and another suggestion: get Steven Page back!!

Ethical treatment of animals my ass!!
(A Police detective in a hazmat suit prepares to bury a puppy killed by PETA)
The wheels seem to be falling off for our good friends over at the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)
A recent Expose of Animal Shelter practices by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has produced some shocking results.
The report indicated that approximately 2,000 animals pass through PETA’s front door every year with the vast majority of them – 96 percent in 2011 – heading straight out the back after they have been killed.
(Photo of PETA ‘death kit’ confiscated by Police from the organization’s van in Ahoskie, North Carolina)
Last year, 733 dogs entered this PETA Animal Shelter. They killed 602 of them. Only 12 were adopted. Also in 2012, the oganization impounded 1,110 cats. 1,045 were put to death. Seven of them were adopted.
Among the other shocking discoveries was a dumpster full of garbage bags, where Police found the bodies of dead animals all killed by the Organization. PETA described these animals as “adorable” and “perfect.”
A veterinarian who naively gave PETA some of the animals, thinking they would find them homes, and examined the dead bodies of others, testified that they were “healthy” and “adoptable.”
So I ask you, is this an Organization you want to support? Where are all the Millions in donations going?
The whole thing makes me sick to my stomach yet still not surprising given some of the antics we’ve seen, over the years, from these clowns.

State document sheds PETA in poor light
A recently discovered Site Inspection document from the Virginia Department of Animal and Food Industry Services shed some interesting light on the controversial organization’s adoption practices.
Excerpts from said document:
A site visit was performed to the PETA headquarters building on July 7,2010 to determine if the organization’s current activities allowed for the continued inspection of the facility as an animal shelter; if the primary purpose of the facility was to facilitate finding permanent adoptive homes for companion animals. The following items were noted during the course of this visit:
1. The receptionist stated that PETA did not operate an animal shelter. When I indicated that PETA did report to operate an animal shelter and that this office has inspected in it in the past, an additional staff member was called to the desk and reiterated that there was no shelter. At this point I asked for Ms. Nachminovitch. Ms. Nachminovitch was called and indicated that she would be at the facility shortly. No other staff was available to begin the inspection.
2. The facility contains three rooms designated as animal enclosures. The rooms are not further subdivided into runs or cages. The three animals occupying the rooms were not being held for adoption purposes (one was being held in conjunction with the clinic operations, one was being boarded for an indigent community member, and one on behalf of a PETA employee). The facility does not contain sufficient animal enclosures to routinely house the number of animals annually reported as taken into custody.
3. PETA’s animal custody records were reviewed, finding that a total of 17 or 6% were recorded as adopted or in foster homes, while 273 or 94% were recorded as euthanized. Of these, 245 or 90% were euthanized within the first 24 hours of custody.
4. Ms. Nachminovitch indicated that the majority of the animals that were taken into custody by PET A were considered by them to be unadoptable. Adoptable animals were routinely referred to other area animal shelters; conversely PETA often took custody of animals denied admittance by other area shelters. Ms. Nachminovitch confirmed that the shelter was not accessible to the public, and that most adoptions of animals were to PETA employees and affiliates.
The findings of this site visit support the assertion that PETA does not operate a facility that meets the statutory definition of an animal shelter as the primary purpose is not to find permanent adoptive homes for animals. This is further supported by other information gathered by or reported to this office summarized as follows:
1. The shelter is not accessible to the public, promoted, or engaged in efforts to facilitate the adoption of animals taken into custody. PETA reception has historically been unaware of the existence of an animal shelter and has stated to enquiring members of the public that no such facility exists. PET A has published suggested guidelines for animal shelters on their website that indicate their organizational preference for the operation of such facilities; their own facility does not satisfy many of the key recommendations. The agency is not aware of any substantive efforts to facilitate adoption of animals taken into custody.
2. Previous inspections of this office have found no animals to be housed in the facility, or few animals in custody.
3. Review of submitted annual animal record summaries by PETA and all reporting animal shelters for the past six years does not support that the facility has a primary intent to find permanent adoptive homes for companion animals. The following data was compiled by this office concerning the reported dispositions of dogs and cats taken into custody over this period.
Given the findings of the visit, it was determined that an inspection would not occur at present. It was indicated to Ms. Nachminovitch that no further action would be taken regarding this site visit until such point that she could respond with information supporting the legitimacy of PETA for consideration as an animal shelter.
All this to say that I certainly wouldn’t want my doggie to end up in a PETA shelter.
Would you??

PETA targeted struggling Ottawa church
I cannot believe it took me a full year to hear about this one; yet one more lowbrow attempt by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to drum-up exposure and support.
But this time they have lowered the bar even further, in my opinion.
This letter was sent by PETA’s Dan Mathews in April, 2010, to Chris Henderson- chairperson for Ottawa’s Kitchissippi United Church (Formerly Westboro United Church) Congregational Council:
April 15, 2010
Chris Henderson
Chair
Kitchissippi United Church Congregational Council
Dear Mr. Henderson,
In light of the recent news that the Westboro United Church has been put up for sale, PETA would like to offer to pay to hang a banner that reads, “God Loves All Creatures. Stop the Seal Slaughter,” on the side of your church until it’s sold.
Global leaders as diverse as Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin, and His Holiness The Dalai Lama have taken a stand against the slaughter, and the European Union recently voted to ban seal fur. We’d like to boost our campaign in Ottawa and send the message to the Canadian government that it’s time to put a stop to this disgraceful massacre once and for all.
Please contact me at your earliest convenience to discuss rates. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Dan Mathews
PETA Senior Vice President
Well, I suppose I should not be surprised by the underhanded tactics employed by this so-called ‘non-profit’ organization, yet I always felt in the pit of my stomach that some things would remain sacred – even for them. I (wrongly) gave them that benefit of the doubt.
Evidently nothing is sacred when it comes to PETA – not even a house of God in midst of financial difficulty. The Westboro Church has since amalgamated with two other parishes to form the Kitchissippi United Church (which incidentally has a fabulous rummage sale each year)
NO, I really shouldn’t be too surprised by PETA’s antics, as now I realize there is no level to which they will not stoop in proselytising their ‘good word’ on animal rights.
Here is PETA’s own press-release regarding their proposal to Ottawa’s former Westboro church, a place of worship right here in our city. I just love the part where these clowns refer to their propaganda ad as a “Win -Win”.
The whole idea of what they did makes me nauseous.
Ottawa — This morning, PETA sent a letter to Chris Henderson, chair of the Kitchissippi United Church Congregational Council, offering to buy space on the Westboro United Church to display a banner that reads, “God Loves All Creatures. Stop the Seal Slaughter.” The council owns the Westboro United building, which has fallen into disrepair and is for sale. Every year, tens of thousands of baby seals have their heads bashed in or are shot during the commercial seal slaughter, which is an off-season profit venture for the fishing industry.
“Our proposal is a win-win solution: It will raise awareness about Canada‘s shameful seal massacre and provide the church with much-needed funds at the same time,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “What better use for a proud old church than to have it serve as a beacon for showing compassion for others?”
Yup, just when you thought groups like this have achieved an the all-time low, they outdo themselves.
Well done Dan Mathews and PETA, you must be very proud.

Lady Gaga meat bikini outrages PETA
My girls have been listening to Lady Gaga music for awhile now and I was never quite sure whether I approved of it or not. I mean come on, its Lady Gaga right!
That is until now….
In the latest issue of Japan Vogue (I am an avid reader btw) the Gagster sports a shiek-looking string bikini made entirely out of red meat, and if I had to wager a guess I’d say it was probably beef.
I personally think the bikini is neat looking, a piece of art you might say. What would they call that, Haute Couture?
Anyhow, our good friends over at PETA had an altogether different take on Gaga’s protein attire:
“No matter how beautifully it is presented, flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal.” said PETA president Ingrid Newkirk
“Meat represents bloody violence and suffering, so if that’s the look they were going for, they achieved it.”
I have no idea what look Lady Gaga was going for in this photo shoot, but she succeeded in upsetting PETA which is just fine in my books.

PETA's Amityville Slaughterhouse of Shame
Although it irks me to provide even the slightest amount of exposure to PETA – one of the biggest pain in the arse and ridiculous organizations I know – I just had to talk about their latest publicity stunt.
Just like an old eccentric millionaire with far more money and spare time than brains, PETA’s latest endeavour was to contact the owners of Long Island’s famous Amityville Horror house with their latest idea.
Oh no they have a brainwave, you better stand back!
No, PETA doesn’t plan on shooting a horror film in the house or lighting themselves on fire (though it wouldn’t be a bad idea) their plan is to set-up a haunted house-style exhibit while the famous movie house is up for sale.
“PETA’s Amityville Slaughterhouse of Horrors” would, according to the organization, graphically depict the horrors that animals who are raised and killed for meat, milk, and eggs must endure on factory farms and in slaughterhouses.
What…come again?
PETA says the exhibit would include animatronic hens locked inside cages and lifelike fish gasping for air as they slowly suffocate on the deck of a fishing boat.
And if that isn’t ridiculous enough, visitors can ask to be locked inside a metal and concrete pig gestation crate, just to see what it feels like. Children would also receive a free crazed, knife-wielding Ronald McDonald doll. (Note to self: gotta get my kids one of those)
Although they haven’t indicated, I can only assume that each visitor to this fine exhibit would also receive a free tofu pie. Mmm, I just love those.
Shame on you PETA, slap yourself in the face and get back to reality, why dont you!
You speak of commercial farming and sportfishing as cruel and barbaric, then you look to using a famous house as a backdrop for your own filthy exhibit to glorify these activities?
Currently on the market for 1.5 Million, there’s no word yet whether the organization plans to actually purchase the famous Long Island home or simply hopes to borrow it for their sick exhibit.
I’ve come to learn that nothing is too lowbrow for these people..although I have to say I do like the Ronald McDonald doll idea…
