Welcome to National Fishing Week

Grace

With the busiest and most important fishing week of the year now under way, anglers in the National Capital Region and across the country are reminded of what this great sport is all about.

National Fishing week got under way this past weekend, and for those who live in the Ottawa region, there is more than enough ‘fishable water’ to whet any angler’s appetite, be they novice or seasoned veteran.

The idea of National Fishing Week is to introduce potential new anglers to the benefits of this past time we call sports fishing. Avid fisherman are encouraged to lead by example over the next few days, by offering those who are new to the sport a chance to cast a line and discover the joy and fulfillment of enticing a fish into biting.

We as wise- conservationists and responsible fishermen owe it to ourselves, to our children and to future generous to keep this great sport alive.

Do the sport a favour and take a young person out fishing this week!

  1. I always take my kids fishing. The city of Ottawa has many places to take children. Also, my wife and I would pack up the kids and go to Perth, Smithfalls, Merrickville and many other little towns in the Ottawa and Seaway vallies. There, you could find great places to fish and have fun. Great quality time with the kids and they will remember it for life.

  2. I’m glad to hear that Elias…so, what would say is your favourite spot?

  3. Took my 2 boys out on Sunday, first 2 casts and my 9year old brought in 2 large mouth bass each around 1.5lbs each. Nothing better watching your young lad trying to bring in a fish and the drag is not strong enough to hold it. Took about 5 minutes to bring the first one in, if only I hadn’t left the camera at home!!! Memory will be with me forever though, and also with him.
Fishing is a great bonding time with your kids!!!

    1. Hey Bob, I haven’t heard from you since the Outdoors Column days!

How are things? Catching any biggies on the Bonnechere?

  4. Caught a few nice large mouth last weekend. Nothing like watching the water explode with a nice bass walking on top of the water. Great eating at this time of the year also.

Elias don’t tell him, he’ll bring all his relatives to your spot and before you know it there won’t be any fish left 🙂

    1. Elias I’m sorry, Iggy does have a point there.

It was wrong of me to ask.

  6. Just about to head off for a fishing trip in Quebec, got my reels strung with that new line I won from you Jeff on one of your trivia questions.
I’ll check in next week and let you know how we did.

    1. Iggy, that Maxima line is the bee’s knees, but make sure you spool it on nice and tight and try
not to get it all twisted up…the beauty is, the line actually changes colour to match the water colour.

      Damn those Germans are smart!

    1. Iggy, it’s a bit of a challenge, trust me!

We’ve tried a whole bunch of different techniques for loading that mono. on spinning reels..everything from feeding it off the face, to loading it front wards.

The best way now I’ve found is the old ‘buddy holding a pencil’ way, with a pencil thru the filler spool with some tension on it. The trick is to make the pencil holder switch directions every once and awhile, that way the line doesn’t get spun only in one direction..

It might not be the most proven technique but it seems to work!

Iggy, may your line be tight and your walleye blue…take some pics to share with us.
