Premier Wynne approves 'experimental' spring bear hunt

Wonders never cease, the Liberal government has decided to go ahead with an experimental six-week spring bear hunt beginning on May 1st.

Premiere Wynne’s camp indicated this weekend that the government has concerns about “public safety and human-bear conflicts.”

This decision will undoubtedly stir animal rights groups who have always maintained that a spring bear hunt orphans far too many cubs.

I will be a guest this morning with my old pal Ed Hand on his radio show Talk to the Hand.

  1. What MNR units Jeff??

I whacked my first black bear with a compound last fall…Santa brought me a New Mathews Heli~m (rated @ 330 fps), just got off the phone with Rob at “That Hunting & Fishing Store” to pick up a dozen carbon arrows come Friday…wold LOVE to take another bruin this spring!

I have bears coming out my ears here near Arnprior!

    Cheers Bro!

    1. Hey BlueGood…haven’t got all the logistics yet..this hunt will be near 6 communites in Northern ON and NW Ontario….no spring hunts around here as of yet!

You went to the Richmond store eh? My Dad got his crossbow there – an Excalibur Exomax I think was the model..verry fast!

  2. Dang….need to whack a few more here…

I’ll be at Rob’s Friday to pick up a doz. carbon arrows…was there last Jan. for a cool VERY FAST drop rest, by QAD for my Heli~m… It is touted as the fastest available with “Anti-Bounce Back” technology….so the rest STAYS DOWN when you release, and your arrow touches nothing but ‘air’ on it’s way to a “Classic Double Lung” shot..he heh….

Pretty pumped about getting back to shooting from 15 to 55 yards….Range is all set up…just need the new darts!…

    :o)

    1. BlueGood, I believe the Excalibur Exomax shoots 350 fps, and Excalibur have a new model, which Iggy has I think, that’s even faster..not that your new Matthews isn’t good…hehe

  3. Just another way for the liberals to gain more northern votes.. and if you think it has anything to do with public safety your head is up your a$$

  4. Very convenient timing. I agree with you Chessy. Election pending, amid a multitude of scandals, suddenly there is a concern for public safety in northern communities. Curious.

  5. Yes, i’m afraid there is a more sinister reason other than public safety being played out. There are a lot of votes and a lot of money at stake for the liberals up north. Besides how else are they going to ensure some sort of livelyhood for the resorts and outfitters when they give the rest of the province to the natives. After they net the waters and slaughter for there “needs” and the needs of every restaurant they can sell to. Given that the north is Toronto’s playground there might be questions asked when there is no fish and game to go after.

    1. Oh, I’m sure the Libs decision to go ahead with this experimental hunt was mostly political, but we should also take it as a positive first step towards reinstating the spring season for ALL of Ontario.

I guess, for whatever reason, the bear hunt in Ontario will remain a political and emotional issue..perhaps one day biology and wildlife management will play a role in the decision making…

  6. @Paul. Its our own fault we buy the walley ,moose deer, smokes if we stopped buying these products from the natives they would not do it as it would not be profitable for them. We only have ourselves to kick in the butt over this.

  7. The liberals may gain votes in the north by reintroducing the spring bear hunt but at the same time they will probably lose many votes to the anti-hunting lobby in the southern area of the province.

  8. @fishr yes but the number they will gain will make it close in the northern communities the numbers they loose in toronto will still give the liberals will have a strangle hold there

  9. This is the biggest Lieberal politically motivated crock of $hit I have ever heard of. I can’t help but wonder how they determined that those people in the 6 chosen areas have more of a health and safety concern than those in areas that were not selected.

    1. Trapper, there is no doubt this has little to do with ‘public safety’..however, in the end it does allow certain northern communities the chance to pursue bears in the spring again…

  10. Imagine a world where politicians actually displayed common sense and simply did the right things for the right reasons? (gripping my crack pipe as I exhale a big cloud of smoke…..)

  11. The reintroduction of the spring bear hunt by the liberals may well have been politically motivated but so was the cancellation of the gun registry by the federal conservatives, who did so to curry favor with their rural base. They’re all politicians and they behave accordingly.

    1. fishr, I know I’ll be accused of being an optimist but why can’t these decisions be based on biology, research and involve fish & wildlife management practises? Would that not be the wiser approach?

The political implications/involvement in fish & wildlife has always irked me….probably why I’ve never written about it to any great degree.

  12. The Conservatives ran on a platform that included abolishing the gun registry. They were elected based on that promise and they fulfilled it. That’s different than what the Liberals are doing here–making policy changes to curry favour in areas where they may be vulnerable if an election were called.

  13. The Conservatives have had their share of scandals (i.e. robocalls) and they practice political manipulation as well, the most recent example being modifications to the Elections Act, which will likely disenfranchise people who would normally vote for other parties.

    1. In case you have not yet heard, two Animals Rights group has just filed a lawsuit against the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

The lawsuit, filed by the Animal Alliance of Canada and ZooCheck Canada Inc. are demanding a Judicial review of the 2014 Experimental Spring Bear Hunt.

A member of ZooCheck Canada was interviewed this am on 1310 NEWS -Talk to the Hand – with host Ed Hand.

It isn’t known, at this point, what implications this may have on the spring hunt.

Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available….

  14. I just saw a post from a guy on facebook for a hunting group. He’s received a letter because he bought a spring bear tag.

That hunt was supposed to start May 1st, but it’s now delayed due this injunction.

A minor win, so far, by these groups, but I tell you folks, this scares me. What is next? Deer hunting? Moose hunting?

If these folks would only put their efforts into something affecting society like poverty, child abuse or drunk driving, it would be worthy.

They seem to forget their heritage and want to stick their nose in someone else’s business.

    🙁
